Oban Elliott faces Madars Fleminas at CW 131

Published

on

Oban Elliott will take on Madars Fleminas at CW 131, the first part of Cage Warriors’ end of year double header, Double Trouble. Taking place on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th December, Cage Warriors returns to the legendary York Hall to finish 2021 with a bang.

Elliott last fought on CW 127, the first night of Cage Warriors’ final trilogy series, knocking out the respected George McManus in under a round, after a year out of the cage.

Talking about the first fight to be announced for Double Trouble, Cage Warriors president, Graham Boylan, said:

“Oban Elliott’s comeback story is remarkable and he showed last time out that he is going to be a real problem at 170lbs. Madars Fleminas is very experienced and will be Elliott’s toughest test to date. This is such a tough fight to call, but with both guys having such exciting styles to watch, I’m sure the fans are in for an early Christmas treat.”

“The Welsh Gangster” Elliott is 4-1 as a pro, with all four of his wins coming within the distance, and told Cage Warriors: “Your resident Gangster is back in the East End!

“He (Fleminas) will bring his gang, I’ll bring mine, but I’ll make sure he needs 999.”

The Welshman experienced a tumultuous 2020 to say the least, having to deal with a medical condition that he thought could end his career and his first loss as a professional, before issues outside of his control pushed back his return to the cage.

Fleminas holds an 8-3 record, and has taken on a who’s who of Cage Warriors alumni, including lightweight contender George Hardwick and former welterweight title challengers Adam Proctor and Jack Grant, as well as former middleweight title challenger, Mick Stanton.

The experienced fighter also has a decision win over the current Cage Warriors middleweight champion, Matthew Bonner.

“The Latvian Express” will be taking to the cage for the first time since his loss to former sparring partner Grant, and told Cage Warriors: “This is a great fight which makes me really excited.

“Oban is saying nobody will want to fight him, that’s why I asked for this fight, (I’m) ready to go and get back to winning ways, and to look for that title once again, there is nothing else that interested me, just that belt and I will come for it…

“I love the Cage Warriors set up, high level athletes from around Europe try to climb the ladder to the top, what can be more exciting?”

Other names confirmed for Double Trouble include: Cage Warriors flyweight champion Sam Creasey, Cage Warriors middleweight champion Matthew Bonner, Cage Warriors bantamweight champion Dominique Wooding, as well as Tobias Harila, George Hardwick and the Figlak brothers.

HOLLOWAY WANTS TO BE DOUBLE CHAMP

Published

on

Max Holloway’s sensational knockout victory over Justin Gaethje at UFC 300 has seen his stock rise almost immeasurably. The former UFC featherweight champion finished Gaethje in the final second of the BMF title fight in what has been proclaimed one of the greatest knockouts in UFC history.

This was Holloway’s second time testing the waters in the lightweight division, and it’s  safe to say he fared better than in his interim title fight defeat to Dustin Poirier back in 2019.

His performance at UFC 300 has opened a lot of potential doors for him going forward. Holloway was the champion at 145lbs for two-and-a-half-years before losing his belt to Alexander Volkanovski back in December of 2019. He went on to lose twice more to the Australian, but in the time since Volkanovski has lost the belt to Ilia Topuria and Holloway has taken out a number of surging contenders in the division, such as Calvin Kattar, Arnold Allen and Yair Rodriguez.

All of this leaves ‘Blessed’ in pole position as the consensus #1 contender at featherweight. ‘El Matador’ was quick to call out Holloway on social media after UFC 300 and it seems the UFC may have a genuine superfight on their hands.

The fact that the win over Gaethje took place at lightweight, however, has also launched Holloway into the title conversation at 155lbs, and last week during an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience Holloway outlined his preferred scenario going forward:

In a perfect world, if I could have it my way, I would be stupid to not say…to fight Conor” said Holloway. “I think that Conor fight would be huge, whatever, but we don’t know  what he’s gonna do. In a perfect world (to me) would be – fight Ilia (45 title), get my hand raised, and whoever’s the next guy up at 55, fight them…try and go for double champ  status, whatever it is…or even three belts! You know like, 45, the BMF and put the BMF  and the 55 against whoever at 55 and that’d be surreal, you know? I think that’d be crazy!”

The lightweight title picture will become clearer after champion Islam Makhachev faces  challenger Dustin Poirier at UFC 302 in Newark, New Jersey on June 1st. At the end of  June, Conor McGregor squares off against Michael Chandler in a bout that has been  scheduled to take place at 170lbs, although many observers (including UFC colour  commentator Daniel Cormier) have been speculating whether that fight could be  contested for a new 165lb title.

Regardless of the weight class, Holloway’s next fight is guaranteed to bring fireworks.
