UFC San Diego |+ Money Moves & Jay’s Betting Picks

Published

on

This Saturday, the UFC touches down in San Diego, California for the first time in seven years, as top Bantamweights clash in the headliner of the evening. “Chito” Vera is riding a three fight winning streak coming into his bout with Dominick Cruz, who has looked impressive in his last two outings.

The San Diego card itself is littered with extremely intriguing match-ups, none more than the Strawweight bout between two women on similar trajectories, Jauregui and Lucindo. With intriguing match-ups coming just as equally as fascinating betting lines. Let’s look at some of the + money bets that I personally like the look of. In no way is this betting advice. These are just my individual picks for the night, please gamble responsibly.

Ariane Lipski by decision (+155)

(Credit: Sherdog.com)

Originally, this bout between Lipski and Cachoeira was scheduled to take place at UFC Vegas 59 and was set to be a flyweight bout, but due to Lipski missing weight and being deemed medically unfit, the bout was pulled and subsequently rescheduled for this weekend. With the bout having now being set as a Bantamweight bout, and despite Lipski being deemed medically unfit just a week ago, I feel this now favours “The Queen Of Violence”. Last weeks card saw 10 finishes out of 10 fights, something I’m almost positive we won’t see this time round, and I like the +155 of Lipski to get it done by decision. Although the 28-year-old has finished nine of her 14 wins, her last two losses have came by way of KO, so conservative fighting might be something we see in this one. I’m also keeping my eye on Lipski by submission at +575 as she has a dangerous submission game.

Josh Quinlan by TKO/KO (+123)

Another bout that we’ve had to wait an additional week for is Josh Quinlan vs Jason Witt. “The Maverick” Quinlan was pulled from his bout last week due to producing a drug test that was found to have traces of dehydrochloromethyltestosterone, but the amount didn’t lead to a anti-doping violation. This wasn’t the first time he’s produced a positive test whilst being with the UFC, as his Contender Series win over Urban was overturned for another positive test, but that one leading to a nine month suspension.

Quinlan is coming into his full UFC debut off the back of five professional bouts, all finishing inside the distance. All eight of Witt’s losses on the flip side have also came inside the distance, making a Quinlan victory inside the distance looking quite likely. With the price for that only sitting at -141, I like the look of Quinlan by KO at +123 as Witt is susceptible to being knocked out.

Cynthia Calvillo by decision (+140)

Despite Cynthia Calvillo coming in off the back of three losses, there’s nothing that makes me edge towards Nina Nunes in this match-up. Nunes is making the move up to Flyweight, hoping to find a home, and some form at 125lbs. Calvillo may be looking to make this one of her last fights in the Flyweight division, having lost her last three.

Nina Nunes, the wife of the champion, Amanda, has stayed with ATT even after Amanda made the decision to part ways with them. She described during the media day that she has been splitting her time between ATT and training at home with Amanda. This is something that could prove costly in her bout with Calvillo. With it being Nunes’ first fight in the division, I see Calvillo posing a tough test for her, but not tough enough that she gets her out of there in the distance. Even though this is a fight i’d probably steer clear of, a Cynthia decision is something I’d back if I were to be at +140.

Which + money selections at UFC San Diego will be entering your slip?

Smilla Sundell Recaps Training With Tawanchai & Stamp In Thailand

Published

on

For a fighter to become the best, it helps to remain humble and focused. And if the opportunity to train with world-class athletes arises, they should grab it with both hands. Ahead of her return to ONE Championship next month, ONE Women’s Strawweight Muay Thai World Champion Smilla Sundell has been doing all that.

The Swedish striker is set to return in the main event of ONE Fight Night 22 on Saturday, 4th May, inside Bangkok, Thailand’s Lumpinee Boxing Stadium, where she’ll defend her crown against Russian ruiner Natalia Diachkova.

Sundell has been dominant across four promotional outings. But she knows she’ll have her hands full with Diachkova, so she recently chose to take some tips from ONE Featherweight Muay Thai World Champion Tawanchai PK Saenchai.

“I did his seminar in Bangkok at PK Saenchai with my friend Matt. We went there and wanted to learn some new skills and see how he did seminars because I want to go to America after my fight to do seminars. I’ve done one now, and I like teaching, so it was fun,” Sundell said.

“There’s no competition in it. He’s like a cat playing with a rat. It’s too easy for him sometimes. He doesn’t even try.”

The strawweight Muay Thai queen sharpens her skills at the Fairtex Training Center in Pattaya, Thailand, alongside other world-class striking talents, like three-sport ONE World Champion Stamp Fairtex.

Stamp’s fun-loving nature has rubbed off on Sundell, but it’s her commitment to never backing down that has truly inspired the 19-year-old sensation.

“She’s always been a happy girl and trains hard every day. She’s basically the same funny girl. Still hungry (to get wins),” Sundell explained.

“I think I learned that you can achieve whatever you like as long as you put in the work. But I learned that from my parents, too. But maybe more practical, in a sense, because Stamp did it in martial arts.”
